WE KNOW THAT FINDING THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY DURING THESE TIMES IS FORMIDABLE, AND THAT YOU FACE SOME DIFFICULT CHALLENGES. WE AT FRANCHISE RECRUITERS ARE HERE FOR YOU, AND WE ARE ALL IN IT TOGETHER.
SOME TIPS FOR THE FRANCHISE CANDIDATE ---
As a franchise experienced management expert, it is likely you have not been involved a a job search for some time. Finding that special new opportunity, in the business of franchising, creates an interesting challenge in this economy. The dynamics of search today are variable, erratic, and usually slow. This is a big change in your life. Understand that. Now, take a deep breath, develop a well thought out business plan, refine it, and put the plan into action to market yourself.
CLEAN UP THAT RESUME---
Spend time on your resume, I mean lots of time. Have others proof read it. Refine, and rewrite the document. Consider drafting your resume for each specific opportunity you go after so that you reflect the franchisors business responsibilities, culture, and needs. Punch up your values. What separates you from other candidates? Take a close look at your skills and highlight all for the hiring officer to consider, and clearly understand. Show what you bring to the management team the day you arrive.
IDENTIFY FRANCHISORS TO CONTACT---
Now, target your search. Look for franchisor brands in your area to start, a one-day driving distance, then, systems where you have contacts, franchisors in which you have a nexus across the country. Begin by arranging meetings with people you know. Blindly sending out resumes is not worth your time today. Too many in the mill. Make a list of everyone you know in franchising, and reach out to him or her individually via e-mail, personal notes, letters, or calls. Send them your resume and include your background in your written message. (Always copy and paste your resume to your e-mail, as well as include a Word attachment. Some recipients will not click on the attachment for fear of software complications, such as a virus, and your attachment resume may never be read.)
WORK TO GET A MEETING SET---
Your goal is a set meeting. With a reunion, you can explore what is going on at the franchisor and perhaps learn of openings where you can add value and experience to their system. Even if brands are not hiring, your contacts may know of others that are looking for your skills, need them now. This is just one part of your networking. Other sources are your alumni groups, local franchise association meetings, area sales and development shows as well as expos. Show up and work the booths and crowd professionally.
CONTACT PEOPLE YOU ALREADY KNOW IN FRANCHISNG---
You want to meet with people who have shared interests and can be helpful to you. Initiate networking outside your comfort zone with people you respect. Schedule one of these types of meetings a day, if not more. This is your job now. Fill your day with communications you can track.
WORK A FULL DAY, FIVE DAYS A WEEK CONNECTING---
Employment is a numbers game today in this franchise marketplace. Discipline is the rule. Get yourself involved for an established number of hours each day. Work long and hard. And don’t forget the headhunters. Business is slow for them too. Work to establish a connection. Don’t be too hard on these folks; they are facing a critical time as well. We will get through this together, and the business relations we establish today, will last us all a lifetime. Lots of numbers in, and one winner out. Oh, and, help a few others along the way when you can. Take time to do this for someone each and every day. Good luck. JW
